Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Following VASER liposuction and Renuvion (J-Plazty) skin tightening, the aftercare is as important as the surgery itself. To ensure you get the best possible results with as few complications as possible, excellent aftercare is essential. The aftercare includes maintaining excellent compression with compression garments and regular manual lymphatic drainage massage.
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
Manual lymphatic drainage is a type of therapeutic massage treatment. It has many beneficial effects for your general health. We always recommend this type of massage is carried out by a qualified MLD therapist. However, certain elements should also be practised at home and help supplement your recovery. The key motion is achieved by light pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes to increase the flow of lymph and reduce toxins in your body.
What does lymphatic drainage massage do?
Performing lymphatic drainage massage can help both the entire body as well as improve the texture of the skin.
The lymphatic drainage can:
- reduce the chance of minor colds and viruses – helps the body fight off infection
- help reduce water retention – lymph system has no pump; if you sit for a long time without moving, the lymph can’t flow easily which may cause swelling in the fingers and feet
- boost weight loss – an improved lymphatic system will improve your metabolic rate, which helps you burn calories more efficiently.
Lymphatic drainage massage improves skin texture :
- gives you clean, healthy pores
- reduces swelling, puffiness and blotches
- speeds up healing in scar tissue
- helps to reduce cellulite; the massage increases blood flow and circulation

How does lymphatic drainage massage help after liposuction?
Lymphatic drainage massage is especially helpful after VASER liposuction and Renuvion. It helps to quickly remove the build up fluid in the tissues. Following surgery the body’s natural response is to produce a lot of fluid that gets trapped in the treated areas. In addition there is always some residual fluid left behind from the tumescent local anaesthetic that is used to perform the procedure.
After Renuvion (J-Plazty) skin tightening the underside of the skin can swell up more than VASER liposuction alone and hence compression and lymphatic drainage are even more important. Lymphatic drainage massage helps tremendously with this fluid build up and also to ensure the skin is looked after and recovers well.
What is the lymph system?
The lymph system transports nutrients and oxygen to cells, whilst collecting toxins on the way and successfully flushing them out through the lymph nodes. However, the lymph system does not have a pump like the heart does to help push the lymphatic fluid around. This is where the lymphatic drainage massage helps, as it provides the guidance needed to have an effective method of moving the fluid.
Lymphatic drainage massage should be carried out by an expert
Manual lymphatic drainage massage is very different to conventional massage techniques. It is very important this is carried out by a qualified massage therapist who is trained in MLD and has experience of treating clients who have had liposuction. Massage that is too aggressive can result in poor results. After most of our VASER liposuction and Renuvion procedures we recommend at least 5 to 10 sessions depending on the type of treatment you have received.
Book your Lymphatic Drainage Massage at Rejuvence Clinic
We recommend all our clients arrange their massage sessions with us. We can provide a bespoke package price of 5 or 10 sessions and this can also be incorporated into your overall treatment price. Patients who have had liposuction treatments elsewhere in the UK and abroad are also more than welcome to use our service.
We always remind our clients that the surgery is only 50% of the job. Excellent aftercare is just as important and Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is an essential part of this.
