Platelet Rich Plasma – Developments in Hair Loss Treatment in 2016

At Rejuvence Clinic we strive to provide our clients with the most cutting edge treatments in the field of aesthetics and anti-ageing medicine. Clients seeking treatment for hair loss, mainly male and female pattern hair loss, are normally very well informed. They are seeking treatments that actually work. At the same time they have realistic expectations of what can and cannot be achieved.

At Rejuvence we pride ourselves on providing our clients with competitively priced treatments that have a sound evidence base. Evidence-based treatments are treatments that have been shown through scientific research and published studies to produce positive results that can be easily measured and appreciated.

At Rejuvence we consider ourselves specialists in the use of platelet rich plasma (PRP) for the treatment of many age related concerns. Specifically we consider PRP to be a real alternative treatment for male and female pattern hair loss, especially when combined with micro needling and mesotherapy. Research into the effectiveness of PRP in the treatment of hair loss has continued apace in 2016. Numerous groups around the world have published stronger data in support of PRP in the treatment of male and female pattern hair loss, with many, previously dubious about PRP, starting to sit up and take notice.

In 2016, the first meta-analysis of PRP in hair loss, was published. A meta-analysis is a statistical study that pools data from many previously published studies. It is considered a Level 1 form of scientific evidence – this is the highest level of scientific evidence in favour of a particular type of treatment. Dr Gupta and Dr Carviel, based in Ontario, Canada, published the results of a meta-analysis on the effects of PRP treatment for androgenic alopecia. They considered the results published from 17 studies on PRP.

They conducted statistical analysis on the results of 4 of these studies that all measured the effects of PRP on hair growth. They presented their results on a forest plot – specialised graph pooling results from many studies. Their results demonstrated a positive effect of PRP on hair growth. Patients who received 3 sessions or more of PRP demonstrated increased hair density that was evident at 6 months and 12 months. However, it was noted that hair loss started to resume after 12 months suggesting maintenance treatments every 6 months or so are needed.

Gupta and Carviel also highlighted the importance of using a platelet activator before injecting PRP into the scalp. Those who added calcium chloride as an activator to their PRP before injecting into the scalp, produced better results than those who did not. Not all clinics providing PRP therapy recognize the importance of using an activator and it is essential for the discerning hair loss client to ask their practitioners if they use an activator and if not why not.

Gupta and Cerviel also observed that there were reduced benefits from PRP treatment in those patients with a Norwood Classification grade of more than 4. The best results were obtained in those with Norwood Classification Grade between 2 and 4. The Norwood Classification is a grading system for hair loss in men. Hence those who have been suffering with hair loss for longer and have a greater degree of hair loss at first treatment session are likely to benefit less from PRP. In other words, the quicker treatment is started, the better. For the complete Norwood Classification for male pattern hair loss please follow this link.

At Rejuvence Clinic we take the utmost care to incorporate up to date and cutting edge techniques into our treatments. We use the Dracula PRP system, popularised by Dr Daniel Sister – the Godfather of PRP in the UK. We ensure to use an activator in all our treatments. We also use the U225 Mesotherapy Injector to administer the PRP into the scalp at varying depths as well as provide thorough microneedling at each session. Our treatments are almost completely painless and this is without the need for local anaesthetic. Local anaesthetic is believed to interact with platelets in the PRP and can inhibit their function. Our prices are the most competitive on the market and we provide comprehensive packages – Rejuvence Regrow Intense (4 sessions over 3 months) for £995.00 and Rejuvence Regrow Premium (4 sessions over 3 months followed by further 4 sessions over 8 months) for £1895.00. We also advise all our patients to start Viviscal Professional hair loss supplements.
