What Happens During Phototherapy Treatment?

Phototherapy treatment can help with a wide range of skin problems, from lines and wrinkles to acne and inflammation. One of the benefits of this treatment is that it is so safe and easy to undergo. You can achieve excellent results without having to resort to chemicals or abrasive treatments.

During the Treatment

Any traces of makeup, moisturiser or other skincare products will need to be cleaned off your skin before the phototherapy treatment begins. These kinds of products can interfere with phototherapy. You will also need to remove any clothing that is covering that area to be treated, so try to wear something that is easy to remove or that won’t get in the way.

When you are ready, the phototherapy treatment will begin. You won’t be able to feel anything during the treatment as there is no heating, chemicals, or physical contact involved. Phototherapy treatment doesn’t damage your skin in the same way as sunlight or a sun-bed might do. LED lights of the right wavelengths will simply be shone on the area that is being treated. It will usually take about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how much skin needs to be treated and the reason for the treatment. All you have to do is try to relax and be patient.

After the Treatment

Phototherapy is very safe, so there aren’t any potential side effects to be worried about after the treatment. You will be able to return to your normal routine right away. You may see some of the effects of the treatment right away, such as a reduction in inflammation or an improvement in your skin’s condition. Other effects can take a few days to appear as it takes time for your skin to respond. Depending on your reasons for having phototherapy, you may need to come back for additional treatment sessions before the effect is complete. The results should then last for several months.
