Dermal fillers are one of the most common aesthetic treatments performed in the UK. They are commonly used to combat the key signs of facial ageing including loss of facial fat, loss of facial volume and the treatment of static wrinkles – wrinkles not associated with facial movements. They can also be used to enhance certain facial features including the lips, cheekbones, chin, nose and jawline. They can be used to treat regions of volume loss including the tear trough (under eye area) and nasolabial (smile) lines. Treatment is usually quick and the results normally immediate. Results last on average 9 to 12 months and after a couple of treatments often less is needed as the face starts to produce more of its own hyaluronic acid.
How does it work?
There are a variety of dermal fillers available on the market that all have varying degrees of volumising effects and last for a variable amount of time. The most commonly used fillers are hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in abundance in good healthy skin. It has the ability to bind large amounts of water. Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last for around 8 months before they are reabsorbed. Other less commonly used synthetic fillers consist of poly-L-lactic acid (SculptraTM), polycaprolactone and calcium hydroxyapatite (RadiesseTM). These fillers last for longer and have a more rejuvenating effect on the face as a whole. However, there are significant added risks associated with these fillers and much less commonly used.
What is it used to treat?
The face has a complex arrangement of pockets of fat within the cheeks. These are well shaped and taut in our younger years. As we age these pockets of fat lose their shape, shrink or enlarge, and slip downwards resulting in the characteristic folds of the cheek and jaw that we develop as we age. Fillers placed in the right areas can help to replace fat that has been lost and make pockets of fat more taut providing more definition and balance to the face that can turn back the clock and make you look younger. For younger clients discrete amounts of filler can be used to enhance lips and cheek bones to help with definition. Fillers can also be used to treat certain deep wrinkles and scars and over time have a rejuvenating effect on facial skin.

Through good technique and counselling we always try to minimise side effects as much as possible and make the procedure as comfortable as possible for you. The most common side effects of treatment are bruising and swelling. We do are best to avoid bruising as much as possible. Infection is extremely rare. There are documented cases of disasters associated with dermal fillers. These are usually due to poor technique. The greatest advantage of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers is that they can be reversed with Hyalase.
