CryoPen™ – Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery, is a commonly used in-office procedure for the treatment of a variety of benign and malignant lesions. Dermatologists have used cryotherapy since the turn of the century. The CryoPen™ uses liquefied nitrous oxide (N2O) to deliver quick, effective Cryotherapy treatment to all benign skin imperfections including (but not limited to) skin tags, warts, freckles, age spots, milia, fibroma, seborrheic keratosis, solar lentigo, cherry angiomas and verrucas. Using the CryoPen™ we are able to remove all these small lesions with minimal pain and few side effects. Healing is quick with very little scarring and a good cosmetic result.
How does it work?
The mechanism of destruction in cryotherapy is the death of the target cells, which results from freezing and thawing. Treated areas regenerate thereafter. The Nitrous oxide (N2O) destroys tissue by freezing the fluid between cells and forming ice shards and crystals that rupture the cell wall, destroying the cell without harming any of the surrounding healthy tissue.

The CryoPen™ can be used to effectively and quickly remove a large number of small benign and malignant skin lesions including skin tags, warts freckles, age spots, milia, fibroma, solar lentigo, cherry angiomas and verrucas.

There is a very strong scientific background to this procedure and it has been used extensively for decades in both the hospital setting as well as the clinic setting. It is tried and tested and very well trusted by dermatologists and GPs when it comes to treating small lumps and bumps on any part of the body.
We will conduct a thorough examination of your lesion in the clinic performing a dermoscopic assessment and attempt to provide a diagnosis. Following this we mark the region to be treated and clean with alcohol. If appropriate local anaesthetic is applied and the CryoPen™ used to completely remove the lesion. The CryoPen™ accurately delivers an ultra cold, high-pressure nitrous oxide (N2O) jet directly to skin lesions, making treatment very fast and effective. Treatments last between 15 to 30 seconds. Repeat treatments maybe required should the lesions be more substantial.
Side effects are minimal. This instrument is essentially pain free. Most you would ever feel is a small ‘stinging nettle’ type sensation which goes within minutes. After treatment there can be some slight swelling and redness. Rarely a small blister can develop but this is easily remedied at a repeat sitting.
There is no downtime associated with this procedure. You will be able to return to work immediately. Depending on where the lesion of interest is there should not be any major restriction of attending upcoming social engagements.
